amateur radio operators assisted the annual Coyote2moon 100-mile
supermarathon in 2011 by tracking runners and reporting any who missed
their check-in. Several were stationed atop Nordhoff ridge when a
sudden gale forced a cancellation. Some operators managed to walk down
treacherous Gridley Trail to safety as the blizzard made driving
impossible. Tom Sullivan ( call sign W8MKL, in yellow) decided to stay
in the frigid tent overnight because of the darkness, the blowing snow,
and his age (78).
Next morning, four of the runners volunteered to go and get him. Here
you can see them emerging from the forest after climbing the 12 miles
up and down. He was greeted with hot coffee and congratulations.
